Federal judge rejects DOJ bid to set aside 20,000 California ballots
- Carter denied the Justice Department’s request to block counting mail ballots from more than 20,000 voters it suspected were noncitizens, citing states’ authority over elections and the risk of disenfranchising eligible voters.
- He said the DOJ did not explain how counting the ballots would interfere with federal prosecutions, and warned that segregating votes could cause lasting harm to voters and public trust.
- The Justice Department appealed the ruling to the 9th Circuit.
